Alright guys, I am going to tell you this for your own good because I never want what happened to me to happen to you. It can scar you for life.
First of all, let me say that I know that I’m aging. It’s a cold, hard fact people. At 37, I look in the mirror and can see some fine lines starting and some hollowing underneath my eyes. I know that the skin under my chin isn’t quite as tight as it used to be, but overall it could be worse.
Until the other day, the worse arrived.
Remember all of those mirrors I got a while back when picking up a dresser off of Craigslist? Well I decided they needed the last 20 years of filth washed off of them. Big mistake. So there I am on my hands and knees on the floor, bent over the mirrors, and I looked down and gasp!
My face looked like it was melting off. Literally. The skin was just hanging off my bones. I nearly died.
Apparently when I look down (not just tilted down), but down like all-the-blood-rushes-to-your-face down, I have no elasticity left in my cheeks whatsoever. OMG!
When the heck did this happen? It was the scariest thing I ever saw. I told this tragedy to my friend Nicole, and she said she had experienced the same horrific event. No wonder when I’m down on my hands and knees playing with the pups they run away.
I think I may need therapy after that … and maybe the pups too.
Now, I know this all may sound vain, but it’s kind of like how, when your pregnant, and everyday you wake up to a new, horrifically bizarre change in your body — and you are appalled.
Apparently that’s what this whole aging thing is doing too. A new surprise everyday, and not in a good way.
Yes I know I should just be grateful to be alive and well and blessed with the gift of getting to grow old. Don’t get me wrong … I am. But if you want me to be grateful for every wrinkle and sunspot too, that’s not how I roll. There are women that I hear say that they thank God for every wrinkle and crease in their faces because they have earned them. I love that they have that attitude.
Well, If we get better as we age, why can’t our faces? And our bodies for that matter?
I feel like if we have to go through a lot of crap in our lives, we should earn a cute face and body, not droopy ones.
Maybe that’s just me. Of course my dear Topher tells me he loves me just the way I am.
Well what’s he going to say? “Oh yeah when I was laying on the floor watching TV and you looked down to talk to me, your face sagging off of you like a shar pei, you maybe scared the bajeebies out of me?” He’s smarter than that.
Sorry guys, I just had to vent about this shocking discovery. Can anyone else relate? Any shocking discoveries in your life?
Speaking of lines, this new little end table/nightstand has plenty of them. I painted the bottom with DIY aqua chalkpaint, glazed it and waxed it.
The top I painted the same and then added black stripes. Super cute and fresh (unlike my saggy face :0). I will be posting it on Craigslist this week!

Haha! Your to funny. Now do the downward dog yoga poition and see if your legs do the same thing. I was so tramatized that when the gym employee came in to get my girlfriend to change her sons poopy diaper, I volunteered. It was less tramatizing! 🙂
Shanna says
That’s hilarious Cara! I will avoid yoga at all costs!
Teresa says
I did something similar when I was around your age…….and I seriously thought who is that in the mirror?? Very scary! Lol, yes I have lots of sharpei wrinkles, but I’m still not accepting “I earned every one of them”!!!! And the table is lovely 😉
Shanna says
Thanks Teresa! And I’m glad I’m not the only one!
Nicole says
Ha, too funny! Maybe you should try cleaning the mirrors overhead next time :-).
Shanna says
You better believe it Nicole!

Inside every old person is a young person thinking what the heck happened. (Not my quote. I read it somewhere.)
Shanna says
Love it Ms Nancy!
Cheryll Hanson says
That was really funny!! Wait till your 64 and see the wrinkles every day when you put your make-up on. I bet you will be like me and fight it all the way.LOL
Shanna says
Thanks! You better believe it Cheryll!

I had the exact thing happen while cleaning my tub, the reflection in the stainless steel large faucet caught an image I nearly died seeing!! 🙂
Shanna says
I think if we had other people clean for us we would be spared all of these traumatic experiences!

It was quite a shock to me quite a few years ago when I discovered my image in a mirror that I was cleaning on the floor. Hadn’t thought about it for quite awhile, and reading your blog made me really relate and laugh. Have to admit that I tried avoiding getting in that position, where others could also see the old saggy face for quite some time. Then I joined a swim class and after seeing other womens bodies, I started to feel that maybe my old body wasn’t quite as bad as I thought. Thanks for the laugh. Loved the table.
Shanna says
Thanks Diane! Glad I’m not the only one!

LOL and I mean hysteria. I could not stop laughing as I read this. Only because you are hilarious and also because the same exact thing happened to me and I have never told anyone. (Like no one else has noticed) I am a bit older than you well maybe more than a bit but this aging thing has not gotten easier for me. I am grateful for all those blessings listed and I wouldn’t trade any of those for my younger skin but come no one ever told me my face was going to sag off every time I looked at my shoes, which I do quite often…………. Oh, and of course your table is so cool. Have a great week. Thanks for the laugh. ~Wanda
Shanna says
Thanks so much Wanda! Getting older stinks but I guess it’s better than the alternative. Have a great weekend!

You did an amazing job on this just like you always do! And, I’m with you on the sagging stuff. I told my husband I wanted a full body lift and a face lift. He thought I was being silly. I wasn’t. One day…. Anyhoo, thanks for sharing this at the Anything Blue Friday party at The Dedicated House. Hope to see you again at the bash! Toodles, Kathryn @TheDedicatedHouse

The stripes rock. I am struggling a little with aging myself ( I’m 52) everything that use to point north now goes south my 26 inch waist now has 10 more inches and….LOLThank you for sharing at the Thursday Favorite Things hop xo
Shanna says
Yes, one of my least favorite words now is gravity. Also, sun spots, fine lines, and cellulite! What can you do though? You can’t age backwards. God knows with the amount of lotions and potions on my vanity I’m trying. lol! I’ve seen your picture Katie, and you’re still a beauty! Thanks for hosting!

Deborah says
This table is adorable! Do you have any tips for getting the stripes so perfect? I haven’t had much success when I’ve used painter’s tape. What’s your secret? Do tell!
Shanna says
Thanks Deborah! I had a bit of trouble myself Deborah. I used Frog Tape but I did have to go back over two of the stripes. Wish I had a secret, but it was just if it leaks through go over it again. Have a great week!
Britany Betenson says

Shanna says
Awww, thanks so much Rose! As always, thanks for hosting! Have a great week!
Shanna says
Such great advice Lynaea! I need that, especially today while I’m sitting here in my painting clothes, with no makeup and my hair in a bun. I’m trying hard to accept that things are going to change and be happy with what I have. It is hard though. I used to think people that had plastic surgery were crazy. The older I’m getting I can start to see how it would be easy to fall into chasing your youth. Now surgery isn’t going to be for me, but I have stopped judging others for doing it. If that’s what it takes to make them feel better about themselves then so be it. You are right, when I was 20 years old I was so critical of my body and now I look back and figure out why. At this age, I am grateful for the wisdom I have and all of the life lessons I have learned. I just wish I would have learned “stay out of the sun” a little earlier.
Thanks so much!
Sharon @ Elizabeth & Co. says
Love those stripes! And believe me, I hear you on the aging thing! One thing that gets me is glancing down at my hands on the steering wheel. Whose old wrinkled hands are those???
Jann Olson says
Oh girl, you make me laugh. Wait till your my age if you think it’s falling off now. lol! The only thing good about getting as old as I am (pushing 60) is that your eyes are not so good so you can’t see how bad you look. Hee-hee! Love the stripes and the color! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
hugs,
Jann
Shanna says
Oh Jann! I’m already starting to see it on my hands too! They say if you want to really know how old someone is to look at their neck and hands. I’m hoping my eyes go soon too!
DeDe @Designed Decor says
I love this! Pinning! I an now going to go grab a mirror and get on all 4 to see what happens. LOL!
Shanna says
Don’t do it DeDe! That image will forever be burned in your brain! lol!

What a fun piece! I am 37 too, and I have many other problems–I won’t vent, I’ll just say that I can relate 🙂 Thank you for sharing this at Rustic Restorations Weekend!
Karen says
So cute! You look like you are not over 25! I am 44, so I don’t want to hear about aging!!!
Shelly says
Your honesty was refreshing and spot on how I’ve been feeling. It was great to read the same thoughts and concerns about aging. What’s worse, is my sons have made it their quest to see who can take the most hideous pictures of me. Needless to say, they are not pretty to look at.
Age is inevitable. All we can do is embrace it and be glad we are all here to enjoy each new day. Oh, and it helps to hide the camera from the boys.
