My whole life I have had allergies.
When I was in the third grade, I got the birthday present that I had been begging for … a cat.
A neighbor lady’s cat had a litter of kittens born in a tree stump by her home. I picked out the runt of the litter and was so excited to bring her home.
Unfortunately when the cat came home with me, my allergies got out of control. I got allergy testing and sure enough, cats and dogs were high on the results list.
I learned very early on that if I was to own a cat, I was going to have to take allergy medication everyday. There are certain things I can do to keep my allergies from getting totally out of control, such as having the unnamed child handle the litter box, and when kitten needs her hair brushed Topher or the kiddo will take her on the deck and brush her there.
I wish just doing those things were enough … but they aren’t.
I’ve had a few cats since Princess, and most of you all know that today I have Kitten — who is almost 21 years old now.
She has gone through everything with me, from breakups with boyfriends, to dating (and marrying) Topher, to moving, to the birth of my daughter.
I have tried every different allergy medication out there. Some make you tired, some can make you dizzy, some can take weeks to become effective, and some flat out just don’t work.
So a few years ago, when I went to the doctor, he told me that I should try ZYRTEC®.
I had zero dizziness or tiredness while on it, so I have stayed on it the past 2 years. The great thing about Zyrtec is that it starts working within the very first hour that you take it.
One of the things that I hate most about having allergies is having the ALLERGY FACE®, which can include a red nose, watery eyes and a puffy face. ZYRTEC® has teamed up with celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg to help allergy sufferers combat ALLERGY FACE®. Jamie has created six makeup “looks” for allergy sufferers who are trying to camouflage these tell tale allergy symptoms.
I am no makeup expert by any means, so I love on how each look she spells it all right out for you, step by step.
There is even a How To video
The unnamed child and I also volunteer at our local humane society, and after an afternoon working with pups and cats I used to come home absolutely miserable for the rest of the day sneezing, and I would always get a headache. Since I have been on Zyrtec, I won’t say my symptoms are completely gone, but they are greatly reduced.
Am I crazy for having an animal that I am allergic too? Probably so, but now that I am on the right allergy medication, it is more controllable.
Anything that lets me have a life with my fur baby works for me!
How about you? What is the craziest thing you do for your fur babies?

I have also found that Zyrtec is the ONLY allergy medicine that works for me around animals. It’s still not enough but it’s better than nothing for sure. Thanks for the make up tips!!

What a wonderful thing you’re doing volunteering at your local shelter. Both of my dogs have been adopted. My husband has terrible alergies to cats and is miserable when we go over to friends’ houses that have cats. I’ll have to pick some Zyrtec up for him next time.

I can’t even imagine volunteering somewhere that I knew I was going to be allergic…bless you!! It’s great that you have found a medicine that allows you to give back to the community the way you want to, and also to enjoy your pets in your own home!

Fortunately, no one in our family is allergic, so we don’t have to deal with that icky stuff. I do, however, continue to house a VERY large dog who seems to think that everything is hers to chew on… 🙂

Well, my dogs get more vitamins and supplements than I do. They have really nice beds and basically live a life of leisure while I go to work!
Great post – I’m dealing with “allergy face” today, so this is perfect!

Zyrtec is my life saver!! It is the only medicine that helps my allergies. I’m allergic to cats, dogs, grass, trees, cedar, mold, ragweed (which is my worst), etc. When I was little, I had to get allergy shots everyday. I take Zyrtec everyday and life is good.

We don’t have pet allergies, but my sister does. I’m going to tell her about Zyrtec!

Thanks for the information on Zyrtec. My husband has allergies all year long so I’m suspecting that it may be our furbabies’s fault. I will send him to the store today to try it out!

Thanks for the info! I will spread the word to my friends. I don’t have any issues with animals but have friends that do.
