Happy Monday everyone! I hope you all had a great weekend!
It was great weather here, so we were busy staining the deck. Why is it that it takes so much longer than you think it’s going to? We are getting close, but I think it will take another weekend to finish it off.
We had a lot going on, so sadly I didn’t get out there to hit any yard sales. I did spend some time shopping online at some of my favorite stores — shopping as in finding expensive things that I love and then trying to figure out a cheaper way to make it myself.
It’s the old story of champagne taste on a beer budget.
One of my favorite stores to shop at is Anthropologie. I love just about everything, from their from clothes to their home decor.
I saw this pretty Bamboo Inlay Gallery Frame for $24, and I loved it.
I had this frame that I bought for 50 cents at a yard sale a few weeks back, and I figured I would try my hand at getting that same Anthro look.
My first dilemma was where to find tape that narrow. The smallest painter’s tape I have ever used is around an inch wide, which was wider than what I was needing.
I thought about just cutting painter’s tape down the middle, but then I thought that sounded like too much work.
I went to Michael’s and asked for the type of tape I needed, and they sent me to the art section where they had artists tape but it was $18! Forget that!
So then I found this 3 pack of polka-dotted crafting tape on sale for $1.99. I had no idea if it would keep the paint from bleeding through though, but I decided to give it a shot.
I used FrogTape to tape off the inner square, and then taped off the stripes.
I then painted over the tape with Plaster Paint in Native Stone. It took 3 coats to get it all covered. I usually peel off painters tape when my projects are still wet, but this time I decided to let it dry first.
I had no idea what to expect when I peeled off the tape since this tape really isn’t made as a paint barrier.
Miraculously it worked! No bleeding at all!
I was really happy how it turned out!
Theirs was $24, and mine was only $2.50! Plus theirs was only a 4×6 and mine was a 5×7.
Have you made many knockoffs yourself?
Make sure you check out my other friends’ knock off projects down below!

I love your frame project! Smart using narrow craft tape for the stripes. I’ll have to try that next time I want small stripes:) Good replica of the Anthro look too!!
Paula@SweetPea says
Your technique is a great way to jazz up an ordinary frame. The price of your knockoff is definitely much better than Anthro’s price. This would be a cute gift for one teen to give another at Christmas!
