Welcome to the Red, White and Blue Inspiration Tour!
As hard as it is to believe … the 4th of July is less than a month away!
This week, join my blogging buddies and me for some patriotic ideas to spruce up your home!
I found this table for … free from a friend.
It was pretty scratched up, and it smelled strongly of smoke.
I removed the hardware, cleaned it up and got to work.
I painted the entire piece with Plaster Paint in Cobalt Blue — this is the first piece I have ever used navy paint on. I’m usually a turquoise girl, but I decided to step out of the box a little.
After I painted on two coats of navy and let it dry, I started taping off my stripes with Frog Tape.
Once my tape was on, I painted on another layer of blue paint to seal my tape down so it wouldn’t bleed (which isn’t normally a problem with Frog Tape … but just in case).
I then painted on my white stripes with Plaster Paint in Ivory Lace. I went over them twice.
I then distressed my whole piece and coated it in clear wax.
I spray painted my handles with Krylon spray paint in Cherry Red.
I think this would be super cute in a little boy or little girls room!
Check out the other ladies’ projects down below! There will be new projects added daily!

I love this, Shanna! SO fun and even though it has the red handles, it sill has a nautical beachy vibe which I love! XO
Kristin says
How were you able to combat the smoke smell? Does painting a piece take care of that issue? Thanks! It’s beautiful!
Shanna says
Thanks Kristin! I just used dryer sheets in the drawer for a couple of days and it took care of the smell. If it is more severe I will put a coat of shellac in the inside.

Inspired!! I have my husband’s old wooden toy box sitting in our garage and I just can’t decide how to paint it… keep it simple (one color) or get out of my comfort zone and try stripes or geometric shapes. I really LOVE your stripes so as of right now I’m leaning that way. Great job!!
Suzy @ Worthing Court says
This is just adorable! You always do such a great job of seeing the potential in a piece of furniture that I would just pass right on by. Your project is going to be featured on The Scoop this coming Monday night. Thank you for linking up!
MJ says
What a great vision you had!
Will you tell me, does that piece have a laminate top, which it looks like to me? If so is there a problem with the paint peeling off?
You didn’t say, unless i completely missed it, at which point you took off the frog tape. I’d like to check what I think against when you actually removed it. Sorry if this is too basic, but furniture painting take a long learning curve for someone who hates to re-do something once it’s done.

Shanna says
Thanks MJ! This one actually had a wooden top but I have done stripes on laminate with no problem. I always take the tape off while it is still wet. You have a greater chance of it peeling off if it dries. There were a couple of tiny places that I had to touch up because of bleeding but nothing major. If your piece is white and you put on your tape to add the blue stripes, before you put on the blue go over the tape with the white paint to seal it, let it dry and then paint on the blue stripes (or whatever colors you are using). Does that make sense? It helps prevent bleeding under the tape. If that doesn’t make sense let me know and I will try again lol! Good luck and have a happy 4th!
Heather@ viralupcycle.com says
Wow. Shanna, I’m going to keep coming back. Love this. Can’t wait to see more.
BTW. I was thinking (probably from reading certain blogs) that frog tape was better than the blue 3m. Thanks for the honesty.
Shanna says
No problem Heather! I just have a little less bleeding with Frog Tape. Also if You are just normally using Frog Tape (not taping off stripes) once you place it down, go over it with a damp wash cloth on the edges. Frog Tape has a special chemical on it and if it gets damp it seals it and you have less leakage (that’s why when you paint the stripes it’s good to go over it with the same color paint first, it needs the moisture). Just a tip I learned when I met people from the company.
