What’s your favorite holiday?
Ever since I was little, Halloween was a big deal at my house. My mom went all out.
There were none of those store bought costumes with the plastic masks for us. She created these super elaborate costumes that took her months to make.
Not only did she make my brother and I costumes, but she wore them herself: she was a vampire, Supergirl, a witch, a showgirl, a court jester, and just about anything else you could imagine.
At our school, they had a haunted house that my mother (of course) was in charge of, and we had a big costume parade which she headed every year.
When I got my first home, I was super excited to carry on the Halloween tradition and be able to deck my house out from top to bottom.
My mom recently had surgery, and I know it makes her sad that she isn’t able to pull out all of her decorations this year, so my daughter and I decided to make her a little something to put on her mantel to brighten her mood.
We were at Sam’s Club and saw these giant Skittles®/Starburst® Variety Pack (30 ct.) and brought one home.
We are not big chocolate girls, but sour candy is our weakness.
Once we got it home, we realized how much candy we had and weren’t sure what to do with it. That’s when we came up with the Halloween gift idea for my mom.
Here is what you will need:
- A styrofoam ball
- A dowel rod
- A small flower pot
- Orange, green and black spray paint
- Skittles & Starburst 30 Pack from Sam’s Club
- Some decorative rocks
- Toothpicks
- Floral tape
- A plastic cup filled with sand or rocks
- A roll of ribbon (optional), and
- A hot glue gun
First thing I did was spray paint my ball orange.
I knew I was going to cover it in the orange Skittles, but I wanted to make sure no white showed through in between the candies.
I then made a hole at the bottom of my ball that my dowel was going to fit into.
I then spray painted my flower pot black
Next I spray painted my dowel rod green
For the topiary, first I started by gluing-on my face with yellow Starburst.
Next I started filling in all around the Starburst with the orange Skittles — this takes a while but is mindless and easy to do while watching tv. Make sure you leave a small hole at the very top where you can stick in your toothpicks to use as the stem. I used 6 toothpicks and I covered them in the floral tape.
Once my black flower pot was dry, I took a plastic cup full of sand and placed the cup inside of the pot as a base.
I then took my green dowel rod and cut it down so it was about 12 inches tall. I placed one end of the dowel inside the bottom of the ball (I sharpened that end with a pencil sharpener to make it easier) and then set the other end in the sand cup.
I took a piece of ribbon and tied it around the middle of my dowel.
I then took my decorative rocks and laid them all over the top of my cup.
I know my mom is going to love this!
She may not be able to get out of bed right now, but I will set it on her bedside table. This would be a great gift for kids to bring to their teachers or to bring to nursing homes.
Plus, all of the leftover candy you can give out for Halloween or keep for yourself!

Shanna is absolutely right – Halloween is one of my favorite holidays & this Skittles topiary certainly brightened my day.
I was so fortunate that my children allowed me to “get my freak on” every October 31st. What other holiday allows an adult to become a completely different personality & share the joy of make believe with little children? I guess this proves that you can’t take the ghoul out of this old girl!
It was very thoughtful for my girls to fashion this fun project for me & I enjoy it every day from my bedside. My wish is that every woman could be as blessed as I am by having such a loving & caring family!

What a great post! I may be too old to trick-or-treat, but I still look forward to Halloween every year. I go all out, too, and decorate the whole house and come up with an elaborate costume. Those family pics were great, and I love how easy and fun this Skittles + Starburst topiary is! Thanks for sharing! #client

Thanks Laura! It’s funny how the things that embarrassed us about our parents when we were younger we now appreciate. Hopefully that will happen with the unnamed child because right now we are definitely in the everything we do embarrasses her stage!
