A few weeks back, my parents were at an estate sale and picked-up this little guy for me.
I loved the shape, but the green velvet simply had to go. Since I am not one who sews, reupholstering that cushion was not going to happen, so I knew I had to make it over with paint.
I grabbed some Plaster Paint in Sweet Cream, a good paint brush, a squirt bottle full of water, and some fabric medium. I used a 1:1:1 ratio using paint, water, and medium.
I went section-by-section, squirting each area with water, and then putting on a coat of paint. I continued this until the whole chair was covered.
I let it dry for 2-3 hours, and then I went over it again with another coat making sure to get in under all of the gathered areas.
Once this dries, do not be alarmed that your chair will feel really rough and crunchy.
Next, I took a sanding block and went over the entire chair lightly, which will remove some of the crunchiness.
I then worked some Paste Wax into the material and buffed it — which made it softer. Painting velvet will never be quite as soft as a normal flat material, but it is still soft enough to sit on comfortably.
I then painted the wood with Plaster Paint’s Flannel, and once that was finished, I dry-brushed some Sweet Cream over the Flannel to give it some depth.
I then sealed it using Plaster Paint’s Paste Wax and buffed it.

You outdid yourself! I LOVE your chair makeover, especially with the colors you choose. You have vision too, because I would not have “seen” the potential in the chair before and yet it’s a knock-out!

Inquiring about painting a micro suede recliner…how much paint do you think it will take and what size fabric medium do you purchase? I know you said 1:1:1 of water, paint and medium..is that all in the same squirt bottle? Thanks in advance!
Shanna says
Hi Robin! I would say it would probably take a quart and a half of paint depending on how big the recliner is. On the chair that I did I used two medium size containers of fabric medium. The water, paint and medium are all mixed together in a plastic cup and I used a squirt bottle full of water to wet down the area before I paint on the mixture.

I love how this turned out! I have an upholstered chair that was given to me that I’d like to try this on. What kind / brand of fabric medium did you use? Thanks for sharing your project!
Shanna says
Thanks Ashley! I used the Martha Stewart brand and I got it at Michael’s. Make sure you use their 40% online coupon so it isn’t so expensive. Good luck!
Becca says
Wow what a difference! Does its work on all fabrics? I have a chair with that awful acrylic fabric it is like carpet, would the paint work on that kind of fabric?
Thx,
Becca
Shanna says
Thanks Becca! So far I have used it on leather, smooth fabric and velvet and it has worked every time. I would guess that it would work on your chair too. Good luck!

Ohhhh, I’m so totally in love! At first glance I was going to tell you that I’m too scared to upholster a seat back like that – then of course I read on…. 🙂 I’ve got an ugly colored chair sitting in my bedroom that I’m going to hopefully try painting in the next few weeks. I haven’t tried it yet so we’ll see if mine turns out as good as yours! 🙂 Thanks for sharing on Trash 2 Treasure Tuesday and I’m pinning this on the highlights board.
