Guess what today is?
It’s Furniture Themed Thursday!
This month’s theme is Distressed, and all of my blogging buddies and I have some fun new projects to show you!
My brother picked-up this old china hutch for me from a yard sale a while back, and it had been living in my basement for two years now (something my hubby never let me forget). When we installed our new carpet a few weeks ago, and my brother and hubby had to carry this mammoth beast back up the stairs, he said it was now or never because he was not going to carry it back down again.
The first thing I did was clean this baby off. After being in the former owner’s garage for who knows how long, and in my basement for years, this sucker was filthy.
It took for.e.ver to get all the grime off of it, and I had to go in with wet Q-tips in all of the carving work … over and over.
Once it was clean, I removed all of the hardware (which I spray painted a pewter color).
I then painted several coats of Plaster Paint’s Sweet Cream on the outside of the entire piece and their Ocean Breeze on the inside.
I then distressed the entire piece with a medium grit sanding block and coated the whole piece in Plaster Paint’s Paste Wax.
When the piece was finished, I hated the gold scroll work that was on the inside of the glass. I wasn’t sure how to get it off without scratching the surface, though. I tried Goo Gone and lighter fluid with no luck. I decided to try a razor blade, and after a lot of time it finally did come off, until you looked at it in a certain light, and then you could still see a faint shadow of the scrollwork.
So after several more tries of the razor blade and some 0000 steel wool, I finally got it all!
I was really pleased with how it turned out, and if I had room for it in my home I probably would have kept it myself.
Fortunately, after recruiting my brother to help me move it one last time … it sold within days of me dropping it off in my booth!

Please take a few minutes and swing by to visit so many of my talented friends and their Distressed pieces!!

Shanna, that is beautiful. I would love for you to share that at my link-up party today at Idea Box!! Hope to see you there!!
Shanna, it’s beautiful and I’m not surprised it sold so quickly. Love the hardware that was on this piece too! The pop of your signature blue inside is perfect.
Bet your husband is super proud of you now since I am sure you got a pretty penny for this piece. It turned out fabulous and the pop of blue is stunning! Well done!

Stunning piece!! That blue…you know I love it. 😉
I can see why this piece sold so quickly! The paint colors you used with the slight distressing are perfect for this piece. I agree that the glass looks much better without the gold scrolls. I’ll bet that the new owner shows this off to everyone that visits.
I can’t believe how different your hutch looks with the clean white and perfect blue! I’m loving the chunky hardware on it too. I’m lucky you’re not near here or I woud have wanted that piece! Super project:)
I love this!! You are giving me awesome ideas for some pieces I want to refinish!! Thank you so much. Love ya’
Thanks Patricia! It’s amazing what a little paint will do! Have a wonderful week!
WOW! What a transformation of a heavy dated piece! I see this style furniture for sale all the time, it is usually solid but so heavy looking and not a fan of the style. But what you did totally transformed it into a stunning piece. Thank you for sharing your inspiration!
Thank you so much Beth! My hubby thought I was crazy for bringing this one home but I was happy with how it turned out! Have a great week!
Beautiful, Shanna!! That’s awesome that it sold already! Aren’t you glad you finally painted that sucker? 🙂
Shanna, I’m not usually a fan of large knobs, but these really make the hutch pop! The color inside is stunning too. Glad you got the gold off the glass. I have a piece once that I sold with the gold still on the glass. It wasn’t my taste but it sold. Jeanette
Oh my goodness, what a labor of love! It’s so beautiful and I love the pop of color on the inside!!
You always do some amazing things with these old pieces Shanna! This one is a beauty….love that blue interior! 🙂
