Isn’t technology great?
Look at all of the new, techie products out there now that 20 years ago we wouldn’t have dreamed of! A portable phone so small it can fit in your pocket? DVR’s that can “guess” what shows you like? Cars that can sense a collision? And lights you can turn on and off from the Internet?
Things sure have changed since I was a teenager. Now that I have a teenager myself, the most important thing to me is her safety.
As a woman, do you ever feel a little skittish coming home to a dark house? I know I do, and I fear it even more when my teen is the one walking into it.
So when I heard that GE had smart phone light bulbs available at Home Depot, I knew they were the perfect thing for us.
With the GE Link Bulbs, you are able to schedule your lights to come on with the touch of the Wink Hub app.
It’s super easy — just screw in the light bulbs,
Download the app.
And voila!
There are many times I don’t leave the lights on because I think I will be home before dark, but then one thing or another happens, and I end up home later than expected.
I hate coming home to find my poor little pups sitting in the dark
Or to find out my daughter got home before me and walked into a dark house alone.
Unfortunately, in my line of work the third bay of the garage is often filled with furniture and the kiddo has to park outside. Even though we live in a safe neighborhood, her getting out of the car in the dark makes this mama nervous.
With the Wink Hub app, the kiddo can hit the app right before she comes home and the GE Link lights will be on for her.
This will also be great when we are on vacation. I could be states away and have the lights scheduled to come on at dusk so I don’t have to pay to keep them on for a week while we are gone. Or, I can have them change brightness at different times of the day and night to copy my normal, at-home routines.
I struggle with insomnia, so I usually don’t go to be until 3:00 am, so Topher is usually the one that wakes up the unnamed child for school. He has started taking Crossfit classes at 6:00 am and now isn’t home on most days to wake her up. So he started setting the app to turn her lights on at the same time her alarm goes off to make it less likely that she will oversleep.
Saying the kid is not a morning person is quite the understatement. So instead of just having her light flip on in the morning (which would annoy anyone), we’ve set the app to gradually have the light slowly increase over a few minutes. We’re hoping that will improve her mood in the morning (one can hope).

I have no idea yet where I’d use these lights because my brain is still catching up to how this technology all works. But it’s so cool! Definitely would try it out.

This would certainly help with work travel and having the same timers come on each night and see the pattern.

We travel a lot, and this would be so perfect to keep lights switching on. Great product, thanks

I would put this in our living room. We spend most of our time in there and I would love to have something that could correlate with our schedule.

I would love love love this! I work long hours, and with the winter solstice upon us, I am always the first one home but still coming home when it’s dark, and of course no lights on. We try to be energy conscious so leaving lights on all day just seems wrong and costly. This not only would be a warm welcome to come to, but energy savvy too! Its a win-win! Warm welcome, safety, crime deterrent, and energy savings! LOVE IT!
Lyndie says
I would in all possible areas.

I think I’d use this in the lamp we have near our front door. When I come home after being out late, sometimes the house is dark and I’d love to be able to turn on that light. Also, when I come downstairs in the morning, I have four Coonhounds racing down the stairs into a dark living room ahead of me. Again, I’d love to be able to turn the light on from the top of the stairs. I’m very curious to try these out.

I don’t even know where to begin! I guess I would start in the basement. It’s finished, and the light switch is in a ridiculous place. This would help us be able to turn on the lights before going down to find them blind.

We’re really enjoying our Wink hub experience. I’m hoping to convert all of our lamps/lights and eventually our thermostat.
I love the idea of turning on a light before we get home at night. I hate coming into a totally dark house.

With my husband in the hospital long term, I am worried about coming home to a dark home each night. This will give me an extra layer of protection/comfort without leaving on lights for long periods of time. Great idea1
