Guess what I’ve got for you today? An actual furniture makeover!!!
I know it’s been awhile guys. With all of the Christmas posts and the holiday events, they kind of got pushed to the side, but now they are back!
In fact, I have a bunch of makeovers for you today since it is Themed Furniture Thursday!
If you are new here, TFT is where once a month some of my furniture buddies and I do a themed makeover. This month’s theme is Shades of White.
I got this vintage desk at a yard sale last summer. It was beat up and in rough shape.
First, I removed all of the hardware and wiped the last 50 years of grime off of it.
I then coated the whole piece with one coat of Americana Chalky Finish paint in Everlasting. As I suspected, the cherry wood started bleeding through the paint, so I covered all of those spots with a coat of Shellac. I then used another coat of the Everlasting and let it dry.
I then went through and distressed the entire piece.
I was feeling like the desk was a bit too plain and it needed a bit of character, and adding a little depth to the drawers may be the ticket. I found a package of napkins that I bought awhile back, and I peeled away all the extra layers, so that there was only the one top layer with the print.
I covered the drawer in a thick layer of Mod Podge and gently laid down my napkin, trying to avoid any wrinkles.
Once that dried, I topped it with another layer of Mod Podge.
Once that dried, I went over the drawer with my orbital sander with a 12o grit paper.
My drawer pulls were a little dull, so I spray painted them Rust-Oleum’s Pure Gold.
I then distressed the whole piece with a medium grit sanding sponge.
I’m pretty happy with the results!

I can see why you are happy with the results. It is absolutely stunning. I have been meaning to order some pretty floral napkins. There is a blogger who uses this technique a lot but can’t think who she is right now. I also use the Rustoleum Pure Gold. Don’t you love the soft color!
Lucy @ Patina Paradise says
Love how you transformed a dull desk into something with your bright signature style. Not sure I would have had the courage to take a sander to the paper… but I do like the subtle distressing.
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says
Oh my gosh Shanna! This is the sweetest thing ever! I just love the napkins you chose for the drawer fronts! 🙂
